Review Week 6

What is the pen tool used for?The pen tool can be used to easily create vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved lines.
How can you manipulate a path/line in Illustrator? Discuss the use of the white arrow tool, pen+, pen-, and convert too.
To manipulate a path/line, make a point with the pen tool and connect it with another point with the pen tool. To curve the line, hold down the mouse button and move the mouse around to make it any kind of curve. The white arrow tool can make direct selections. The pen+ tool can add anchor points. The pen- tool can delete anchor points. The convert tool can convert anchors.
How can you utilize the layers palette in Illustrator?
The layers palette can allow you to make separate creations on the same palette and also to show certain layers on the palette.
How do you create a clipping mask in Adobe Illustrator?
Make an invisible shape with the shape tool, bring it to the front, lock everything except for the design you want to mask, select everything in the design, and make clipping mask.

Review Week 5

Element of shape-defines a specific area of space.

A two dimensional shape has width and hight.  A three dimensional shape has depth as well as width and hight.  Geometric shapes are structured, often symetrical shapes.  Natural or organic shapes are found in nature or they can be man made shapes.  Abstract shapes are stylized or simplified versions of natural shapes.  Squares projects an attitude of honesty or equality.  Triangles suggests action.  It can also suggest stability if it is pyramid shaped.  Circles conveys a feeling of protection or infinity.

Element of line-They can aid in the readability, appearance, and message of a design.

Element of texture-Texture can refer to the actual surface of a design with the reader actually being able to feel the texture of the paper and materials in the printed design.

Incorporating texture into a design will help create a feeling of richness and depth.

Element of space-Refers to distances or areas around, between, or within components of a piece.

Positive space refers to the object and elements used in a design.  Negative space refers to the shapes around and between those objects and elements.


Element of value-Value is the degree of light and dark in a design.  It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between.

Why/how can icons be used to communicate?
Icons show the audience what is being said in a way that makes it simple.

What is the difference between copyright and public domain?
Copyright is The exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same.  Public domain The state of belonging or being available to the public as a whole.
How can you avoid plagairism in this class? In other classes?
I can avoid plagairism by not using other peoples pictures as my own, reference the pictures, and, in other classes, not typing sentences word for word.

What is OSHA? What do the letters stand for?

OSHA is a government agency in the Department of Labor to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.  It stands for Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

How can graphic designers effectively communicate? In your own words, explain the communication process.

Graphic designers can effectively communicate by advertising designs that viewers can understand and read.

I took this class because I want to know how to create better designs. I want to be able to use the skills I learn in this class to benefit me in becoming a scientist/inventor.

What does it take to create good graphic design?
People must be able to create designs that convey information and are pleasing to the eye.

What is the difference between elements and principles?
Elements are components or parts which can be isolated in any visual design.  Principals tell us how we should organize elements on a page or screen.

Name the six (6) elements of design.
Line, shape or form, space, texture, value, and color.

What can lines aid in, when alone or combined with  other lines or shapes?
They can aid in the readability, appearance, and message of a design.

Which lines suggest a feeling of rest? Why do you think?
Horizontal lines because they seem to represent lying down.

Vertical lines communicate a feeling of what? Why do you think?
Vertical lines communicate a feeling of loftiness because they seem to represent standing straight up.

What lines suggest a feeling of movement? Why do you think?
Diagonal lines because they seem to represent sliding down a slope.

Soft, shallow curved lines suggest what? Why do you think?
Soft, shallow curved lines suggest comfort, saftey, and relaxation because they seem to represent lying down relaxed.

Deep, acute curved lines because they seem to represent waves in a storm.
